Foursquare statistics pagefoursquare.com Foursquare’s new statistics page will share information about users with business owners.

Foursquare, a location-based social network, plans to distribute a free analytics tool and dashboard in the coming weeks that will give business owners access to a range of information and statistics about visitors to their establishments.

Tristan Walker, director of business development at Foursquare, said that the latest features were intended to help local merchants run their stores by giving them more information about their customers.

The Twitter Experiment at UT Dallas

March 4, 2010 No comments yet

Here’s a great example of how Twitter can bring more participation in the classroom.  Video explanation below:

Dr. Rankin, professor of History at UT Dallas, wanted to know how to reach more students and involve more people in class discussions both in and out of the classroom. She had heard of Twitter… She collaborated with the UT Dallas, Arts and Technology – Emerging Media and Communications (EMAC) http://www.emac.utdallas.edu faculty and as a Graduate student in EMAC I assisted her in her experiment.

Retweeting is a Win, Win, Win

Here’s some of the great benefits you will see from quality retweeting on Twitter.
- from Twitter Watch Dog

3 Awesome Benefits of Retweeting on Twitter

A Retweet Provides Value to Your Follower(s)
One of the most important reasons why people follow you is for value. If you can provide value to your followers you will not only make your followers happy, you will most likely attract more followers. Providing quality content is always a great way to provide your followers with value. The first thing that comes to mind is sharing a link to relevant information that is from you or another person.

Note: Try sending quality content by other people It’s good to mix things up all the time. Additionally this positions you as a resource and as a connector to others.

A Retweet Can Benefit Your Personal Brand
Retweeting will help build your personal brand as well as your follower’s loyalty. If you point a follower to an external source that is truly relevant and beneficial to them, the amount of trust that person has in you will increase. The next time you post a link, whether it’s to your website or to an external source, the chances of that person clicking that link are higher than before.

A Retweet Can Help You Build Relationships with others
Retweeting another person’s content is an act of kindness, and others are likely to do the same for you. This doesn’t mean that you should expect someone to retweet your content just because you retweet theirs. but in many cases they do. Remember, retweeting is all about providing value to your followers, typically people will not retweet a post of yours unless it’s perceived as informative or helpful to them or their followers.

Choose your retweets wisely and you can build value for your business and personal brand while strengthening relationships.  The people you follow appreciate retweets (RT’s ) because it helps them get noticed and if the retweet is something relevant to your followers you provided added value.

If done with clear intentions Retweeting is a Win – Win – Win!

Create Your Own Foursquare – DIY Location Based Services

February 26, 2010 No comments yet

Looking beyond the web, marketers are considering location-based services as a way to extend their reach and engage consumers in the “real world.”

The new Socialight Community Platform, launching today, is designed to help enterprise clients connect multimedia content and information to a map interface, which users can access via website, WAP site, or iPhone app. Think of it as Ning for LBS. Ning developed as a MySpace alternative for organizations to create their own niche online social networks. Likewise, Socialight allows anyone build their own Foursquare, Yelp, Gowalla, or SitOrSquat, customized for their own objectives.

Location based services have great potential for for many businesses. It sounds to me like the Sociallight Community Platform could be a good way for a location based tourism organization to create their own location based service. I’m looking forward to seeing how this kind of service gets adopted.

Using Seesmic Desktop as a Single Column

February 25, 2010 No comments yet
I like Seesmic Desktop because it’s fast and it combines all the @ Mentions from the various accounts I help manage. I like that I can have 1 column of combined mentions from 9 different Twitter accounts. This combined feature helps me pay attention and respond more quickly without missing when people are mentioning me on Twitter.

Experimenting with a different look for Seesmic Desktop

I used to use Seesmic Desktop almost exclusively on my computer for all my twitter activity until they removed the buttons at the bottom of each column. Now I find myself switching between Hootsuite and Seemic Desktop for managing Twitter.

Over the last few days I’ve been using Seesmic in it’s single column version and I’m happier with this version for watching for Mentions while I’m actively doing other things. The single column Seesmic takes up a lot less screen space so having it open in the background is cleaner for me and it feels a lot more simple when I’m not actively tweeting. Right now the combined account column views is keeping me using Seesmic Desktop to manage twitter about 50% of the time. Hootsuite is my other go to Twitter app when I’m tweeting from my computer.
